Sarri resigns as Lazio manager: Report

Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri has resigned after scandals pushed the Serie A side back into the European football competition, Italian media reported on Tuesday.

Lazio, contacted by AFP, refused to confirm or deny the widespread reports of Sarri’s dismissal. Lazio lost 2-1 at home to Udinese on Monday night, leaving Lazio seven points behind Italian Europa League leaders Atalanta and four behind Bologna , the last place in the Champions League. Lazio finished second last season but are currently ninth after losing 12 of their 28 league games.

Maurizio Sarri’s side were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich after a one-point lead in the first leg of their last 16 tie. Lazio’s season is not over yet, as they face Juventus for two legs in the Coppa Italia competition. Sarri joined Lazio in 2021 a year after helping Juventus win the league title at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The 65-year-old also won the 2019 Europa League with Chelsea and is best known for his work at Napoli, who came close to winning the Serie A title in 2018.
